Canadian Thanksgiving 2009 at MSU
On Wednesday, October 14, over 50 guests, comprised of students, faculty and friends of Canadian Studies gathered to celebrate Canada’s Thanksgiving holiday.
Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grâce), celebrated on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is also celebrated in a secular manner. Canadians celebrate with a traditional dinner similar to the American tradition.
The evening was enjoyed by everyone! Everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner, with turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and, of course, PIE! Dinner was followed by door prize giveaways and entertainment! The live entertainment included great music from talented student musicians and the evening was topped off with some fun Karaoke!
Canadian students who could not be home for Thanksgiving were so happy to have a chance to enjoy a home cooked meal. Several students commented that their parents were happy to know that “someone was taking good care of them” and that they weren’t “going to be alone” for this holiday.
SPARTICIPATION AND STUDY ABROAD FAIR - HUGE SUCCESSES!
On September 1 the Canadian Studies Center participated at Sparticipation and on September 24, the Study Abroad Fair. Participating in both of these events accomplished our goals. We were able to raise the visibility and awareness of the Canadian Studies Center and promote what we have to offer students on the MSU campus. We made a great many new student friends of CSC at both of these events.
