Canada-US Comparative Natural Resource Policy - Summer 2009

What's this program about?

The overall purpose of this program is to provide students with an understanding of similarities and differences between natural resource policies in Canada and the United States. The proximity of southern Ontario and Michigan offers a region in which many of the natural resources are similar. However, policies have evolved differently on the two sides of the border. When combined, policies in the region reflect many approaches used around the world - for forests, parks and protected areas, wildlife, fisheries, and minerals. Both countries are part of an international market for extractive industry products, and each has its own policy framework for addressing global opportunities and threats. What's this seminar about?

Icebergs, Whales, Puffins, Caribou, Archeology, WWII History, Fishing, Hiking, Music, and the First Sunrise in North America... What do these things have in common? Newfoundland. This program travels to the remote north eastern coast of North America to the isolated island of Newfoundland situated in the Iceberg Alley near the site of the Titanic's collision. Students on this program will experience the music, military and maritime heritage, and Irish culture of the Avalon Peninsula in eastern Newfoundland, one of the oldest inhabited areas in North America. Students will also explore the area's many hiking trails, ecological reserves, and geological parks. Newfoundland also features a parade of puffins, whales, and icebergs around its shores, all of which students will have an opportunity to see first-hand as they consider environmental and sustainability issues. If you care about the environment and like to be outside, then this program is sure to offer you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because if it keeps getting warmer, soon the icebergs will be gone! Natural Science in British Columbia and Alberta

This region provides a beautiful natural laboratory and exciting place to explore and study the phenomena of nature. The program takes place in the Canadian Rockies with Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho National Parks serving as the classroom for an outstanding program. These parks contain some of Canada's most spectacular wilderness - including alpine mountains and meadows, glacial ice fields, extensive forests, whitewater rivers, and a wide variety of flora and fauna. The itinerary includes backpack and day trips from base camps on challenging trails that will give students maximum opportunities to observe wildlife, geology and ecology of this region.
