2008 Faculty Fulbright Informational Workshop

MSU faculty, administrators, and professionals are cordially invited to attend an informational workshop on Fulbright opportunities for university lecturing and research in over 140 countries during the 2009-2010 academic year. In this workshop faculty and professional fellowship opportunities will be described and the elements of a competitive Fulbright application explained as well as the review and selection process. Opportunities to host visiting foreign Fulbright scholars will also be discussed. A panel of former Fulbright fellowship award winners will also discuss their Fulbright/Fulbright-Hays experiences.

The workshop will provide an opportunity to:

  • Learn how a Fulbright experience can enhance your career and enrich your life
  • Learn about lecturing and research opportunities in 140 countries
  • Receive advice on country options and how to make meaningful contacts abroad
  • Receive pointers on how to prepare a successful Fulbright application
  • Find out how you can host a visiting Fulbright Scholar from abroad
  • Ask questions and participate in informal discussions with previous MSU Faculty Fulbright Award Recipients

The Fulbright Scholar Programs for U.S. Faculty

The Fulbright Scholar Programs listed below offer U.S. faculty, administrators, and professionals grant opportunities for a wide variety of overseas programs to lecture, conduct research, and/or participate in seminars. Several new faculty Fulbright Programs have been initiated during the past several years. These are described in the Fulbright Scholars PowerPoint Presentation. The eligibility and deadline requirements are briefly described below. All programs listed are linked to their respective websites, and additional information is available.

  • The Traditional Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

    • Description: The traditional Fulbright Scholar competition for 2009-2010 will open on or about March 1, 2008. This program provides about 800 grants each year for U.S. faculty and professionals to travel overseas and lecture, conduct research, or participate in seminars. Some Fulbright Scholar opportunities for the 2008-2009 academic year are still available, though awards are closing daily. Please be mindful that you cannot complete your application online after the award has closed. Search on-line for information on available awards for a particular competition by country, region, or discipline.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
    • Deadline: The application deadline is August 1, 2008.

    Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship

    • Description: The Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Program funds fellowships to faculty members through their university for periods of 3 to 12 months. The purpose of the grant is to conduct research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies to improve their skill in languages and their knowledge of the culture of the people of these countries. Proposals that focus on Western Europe are not eligible. FY 2009 applications usually become available on-line on or about August 31, 2008. In FY 2008 this program awarded 20 fellowships averaging about $69,700 each.

    • The MSU Fulbright-Hays FRA Project Director, Frank M. D'Itri, is registered in the U.S. Department of Education's e-Application system and is the only point of contact between the MSU faculty member and U.S. Department of Education. A faculty member's FRA application must be submitted electronically to the MSU Project Director who is responsible for reviewing and submitting it along with required documentation from MSU Contract and Grant Administration to the U.S. Department of Education. Only the MSU FRA Project Director can submit an individual faculty application to the U.S. Department of Education.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
    • Deadline: The tentative application deadline will be on or about October 31, 2008.
  • Fulbright Senior Specialists Program

    • Description: Senior specialists are matched with project requests from non-U.S. post-secondary academic institutions. Grant awards of from two to six weeks are given to support collaboration on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning, and a variety of other activities.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
    • Deadline: Applications for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program are accepted on a rolling basis, and peer review of applications is conducted eight times per year.

    Fulbright New Century Scholars Program

    • Description: Each year approximately 30 research scholars and professionals from the U.S. and abroad are selected to participate in the New Century Scholars Program through an open competition. Approximately one-third of those accepted will be U.S. citizens while the remaining two thirds will be visiting scholars from countries with Fulbright Scholars Program. In this case the traditional Fulbright research exchange experience is combined with a series of three in-person seminars. In addition ongoing virtual communication is maintained among the multinational and multidisciplinary participants under the guidance of the New Century Scholar Distinguished Scholar Leader.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
    • Deadline: The 2009-2010 New Century Scholars Program has not been announced.
  • Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Award Program

    • Description: Small institutional grants are awarded to Fulbright alumni to develop innovative projects. These are expected to foster institutionally supported linkages and sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships between the Fulbright scholar's home and host institution. In 2004, 30 awards were given ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. The guidelines are presently being revised. The program has been temporarily suspended for the foreseeable future. Please check back for updates.
    • Eligibility: Alumni of the U.S. and Visiting Scholar Fulbright Scholar Program for Faculty and Professionals administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), who had grants in 2000/01, 2001/02, and 2002/03.
    • Deadline: The program has been temporarily suspended for the foreseeable future CIES appreciates your interest in the program. Please check back at this site for future program announcements.

    Fulbright International Education Administrators Program

    • Description: The competition for 2009-2010 International Education Administration awards usually opens on or about March 1, 2008. Seminars of two to three weeks are designed to introduce participants to the society, culture, and higher education systems of Germany, Japan, or Korea.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
    • Deadline: The application deadlines for the 2009-2010 International Education Administrators Program are as follows:
      • Japan and Korea--November 1, 2008
      • Germany--February 1, 2009
      The application deadline for the 2008 International Education Administrators Program has yet to be announced.

    Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program

    • Description: Each competition offers opportunities for senior scholars with a significant publication and teaching record.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements.
    • Deadline: The application process has two phases. The first phase of the 2009-2010 program requires applicants to submit hard copies of the Distinguished Chairs Application Form (one page), a letter of interest (about three pages), a curriculum vitae (maximum eight pages) and, if required, a sample syllabus (maximum four pages) on or about May 5, 2008. Then a short list of candidates will be invited to submit full applications on August 1, 2008.
