MSU and National Deadlines

April 2, 2009

  • MSU students scheduled to graduate in 2010 are invited to attend the Fulbright Information Workshop on Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Room 303, International Center, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
  • In the event of a scheduling conflict for the April 1, 2008, workshop, consider attending the Fulbright Graduate Student Workshop on Tuesday, April 2, 2009, in room 303 International Center from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Otherwise e-mail Professor Frank M. D'Itri (ditri@msu.edu), the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA), and request to be added to the mailing list to receive information about the Fulbright IIE application process, future workshops, program deadlines, and other relevant issues.

May, 2009

  • Fulbright IIE applicants can initiate the online application process on May 1, 2009. First read all sections of this webpage Before You Start. Additional information is available in Application Instructions, and Applicant FAQs..
  • To begin the application process, open Apply Now and follow the instructions. List Professor Frank M. D'Itri, the MSU Fulbright Program Adviser, as your MSU contact. For additional help in completing the IIE application, view these guides: Filling Out the Fulbright IIE Application Forms and the Fulbright Proposal Writing Guide.
  • Begin brainstorming with faculty advisers and other resource persons to develop a plan of study/research. Commence an initial draft of a two page, single-spaced proposal and a one-page, single-spaced personal statement.
  • Make appointments with your academic adviser and the professors or others you plan to ask for letters of recommendation. Provide them with copies of your preliminary proposal, personal statement, and any other helpful information to enable them to submit their recommendation letters to the MSU FPA by September 24, 2009. Make a second appointment to review the draft proposal and solicit their suggestions on how to revise and strengthen your preliminary proposal and personal statement.
  • Identify and begin to contact likely cooperating agencies, universities, and/or other organizations in your chosen host country to request letters of affiliation.

June-July, 2009

  • Solicit the assistance and advice of appropriate faculty, other advisers, and fellow students to review your proposal and personal statement critically. Then revise your application online.
  • Contact all of the academic institutions you have attended since high school and request that original transcripts be mailed directly to the MSU FPA. US Student Fulbright Program Deadlines--International Studies And Program | Michigan State University - Funding and Scholarships
  • Contact the relevant MSU language department to locate a qualified instructor to document your language proficiency, if applicable. Request that the Foreign Language Report be mailed directly to the MSU FPA.
  • Follow up the initial contact with collaborating agencies, universities, or other organizations in your host country to determine the status of your request for a letter of affiliation. Whenever appropriate, provide them with a draft of your proposal. Their letter of affiliation must be printed on the host organization's letterhead stationery.

August-September 2009

  • Reschedule appointments with the individuals you have asked to write recommendation letters. Before your meeting, send them your revised proposal and personal statement for their review and critique. If they have not yet written and submitted your recommendation letter online, gently remind them to do so before the MSU application deadline.
  • If you have not received a letter of affiliation from the collaborating agency/university/organization in your intended host country by August 28, 2009, immediately re-contact them and request that they to mail it to you or the MSU FPA as soon as possible but no later than the MSU application deadline.
  • On or about September 1, 2009, enter your IIE application on line to check/confirm that your three recommendation letters and Foreign Language Report, if applicable, are attached. Also confirm that all university transcript(s), and any host country letters of acceptance, affiliation, and/or endorsement have also been received and/or submitted to the MSU FPA.

September 24, 2009

Submit the following materials to the International Studies and Programs Office, Room 209 International Center, by 5:00 p.m. on the MSU Application deadline:

  • Official Fulbright IIE Program application (signed original plus four copies)
  • Three letters of recommendation as attachments to the online application.
  • Foreign Language Report, if applicable, as attachment to the online application.
  • Original transcript(s) from all institutions attended since high school and letters of acceptance, affiliation, and/or endorsement on letterhead stationery, if applicable have been received by the MSU FPA,

September 25, 2009

  • The FPA distributes the Fulbright IIE applications to the MSU Campus Fulbright Evaluation Committees for review.
  • A 30-minute interview with the MSU Fulbright Evaluation Committee is scheduled for each applicant. More information on the interview process is available from The Fulbright Campus Review and Interview Process.
  • If your interview has not been assigned by September 30, 2009, contact the MSU FPA.

October 5-8, 2009

  • Each Fulbright IIE applicant is interviewed by an MSU Campus Fulbright Evaluation Committee to review and discuss the candidate's academic and professional qualifications, proposed study/research, language qualifications, motivation, host country selection, and any other pertinent information.
  • In this meeting students will be asked to briefly describe their projects. They will also have the opportunity to ask and answer questions. After the interview, the applicant will receive comments and suggestions from the Fulbright Evaluation Committee members to assist in revising the application.

October 14, 2009

  • Submit the signed, final application and three copies to the International Studies and Programs Office, Room 209, International Center, by 5:00 p.m., on the MSU revised application deadline. The MSU FPA is responsible for forwarding all applications to the Fulbright IIE Program. They cannot be submitted by the students.
  • The applicant's on-line application must also be submitted electronically to the MSU FPA to be forwarded to the Fulbright IIE Program Office by the national deadline.

National / International Review and Selection Process

November-December, 2009

  • The Fulbright applications are reviewed by domestic multidisciplinary review committees convened by IIE to screen applicants and recommend candidates.

January-March, 2010

  • Review of the IIE recommended applications by Fulbright Binational Commissions or by the Public Affairs Section of U.S. Embassy abroad, together with prospective host institutions.

March-April, 2010

  • Results of IIE international screenings are forwarded to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

May-June, 2010

  • Review and official selection of award winners by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
