Giving to ISP

Michigan State University has a long and distinguished history in international education. We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Office of International Programs at MSU. Working with MSU's talented faculty, the centers and programs in ISP have been the catalyst for many of MSU's international activities and involvements. Over the decades, MSU has contributed to more than 200 major international development, research, and technical assistance projects, in dozens of countries, in such areas as agriculture, business, democratic institution building, education, environment, health, and poverty alleviation.

Here at home, ISP unites faculty from across the university to focus on various areas of academic inquiry, facilitated by various Area Studies Centers and Thematic International Institutes. These units highlight the geographic, historical, political, and social impact of goods, ideas, and culture around the world.

Under the leadership of its 20th President, Lou Anna K. Simon, MSU has made the global awareness of our students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies a major institutional priority. A key element of her new "Boldness By Design" initiative for the university is expanding MSU's international reach through academic, research, and economic development initiatives and global, national, and local strategic alliances.

Among the many tangible results of MSU's deep commitment to international engagement and internationalization of the campus are:

  • MSU was the first major university in the United States with a dean of international programs.
  • Approximately 1,300 faculty members are involved in international research, teaching, and service projects and programs.
  • MSU is consistently among the top U.S. universities in terms of the number of students studying abroad each year, according to the Institute of International Education. We offer more than 230 programs in over 60 countries on all 7 continents. During 2005-06, 2,787 students studied abroad through MSU.
  • MSU is home to more than 25 internationally focused centers, institutes, offices, and programs throughout the university
  • Nearly 3,300 students representing 134 countries are studying on campus in 2005-06.

I encourage you to explore our web site and to learn about the wide range of exciting opportunities for you to join us as an international partner as we build even stronger more thought-provoking initiatives for our students and faculty to become global citizens in the 21st century.
