Global Encounter: Brazil

Framing MSU's Engagement in Brazil for the 21st Century

Global Encounter: Brazil was a sequel to MSU’s campus-wide Global Encounter <www.isp.msu.edu/globalencounter> and was designed to obtain input and to elaborate in a country-specific forum on relevant themes, opportunities, issues, and obstacles affecting MSU’s current and future engagement in Brazil and Lusophone countries.

Some 120 MSU faculty, staff, administrators, graduate and undergraduate students, visiting international scholars and professionals, and emeriti faculty attended the Brazil session on November 7, 2006 in the International Center. More than 60 campus units were represented.

The event, following the pattern of Global Encounter, was highly interactive and participatory. After a full-group discussion of where MSU is now in Brazil (e.g., alumni and student enrollments), the Brazil Concept Paper, the Brazil Initiative, and an explanation of the themes, attendees participated in discussions of one of six thematic areas: Bio-economy and Development; Cultural Hybridizations; Environment, Technology, and People; Health, Education, and Other Social Disparities; Institutional Planning and Support; and Political Economy, Commerce, and Global Relations. Discussions related to Making a Difference and Moving toward Action in Brazil.

The MSU Community can continue to engage in deliberations related to Global Encounter-Brazil after reviewing the input at http://www.isp.msu.edu/globalencounter/Brazil. The proceedings and data from the November 7 discussions and supporting materials are posted there. ISP welcomes your comments on these at <globalencounter@isp.msu.edu>. Comments may also be submitted to the Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies or the Dean of International Studies and Programs. If you are interested in subsequent efforts related to Brazil and other Lusophone countries, consult http://www.isp.msu.edu/bric/Brazil and/or contact Cynthia S. Simmons (simmo108@msu.edu), Director-MSU Brazil Initiative.
