Global Encounter: China

Framing MSU's Global Engagement for the 21st Century

Executive Summary

Global Encounter: China was the first sequel to MSU's campus-wide Global Encounter and was designed to obtain input and to elaborate in a country-specific forum on relevant themes, opportunities, issues, and obstacles affecting MSU's current and future engagement in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Some 100 MSU faculty, staff, administrators, graduate and undergraduate students, visiting international scholars and professionals, and emeriti faculty attended the China session on May 18, 2006 in the International Center. More than 50 campus units were represented.

The event, following the pattern of Global Encounter, was highly interactive and participatory. After a full-group discussion of MSU's China Initiative that President Simon launched in 2005 and the paper that helped shape that initiative, attendees participated in discussions of one of three thematic areas: Education, Environment, and Food Systems. In an additional participatory workshop session, attendees focused on issues related to stakeholders (alumni; MSU students; students from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong; and the MSU/community).

The MSU Community can continue to engage in deliberations related to Global Encounter-China after reviewing the input at http://www.isp.msu.edu/globalencounter/china. The proceedings and data from the May 18 discussions and related exercises are posted there. ISP welcomes your comments on the posted reports at globalencounter@isp.msu.edu.
