Global Encounter: India

Framing MSU's Engagement in India for the 21st Century

Executive Summary

Global Encounter: India was a sequel to MSU’s campus-wide Global Encounter and was designed to obtain input and to elaborate in a country-specific forum on relevant themes, opportunities, issues, and obstacles affecting MSU’s current and future engagement in India and the South Asia region. More than 150 MSU faculty, staff, administrators, graduate and undergraduate students, visiting international scholars and professionals, emeriti faculty and members of the community attended the India session on September 22, 2006 in the International Center. More than 90 campus units were represented. The event, following the pattern of Global Encounter, was highly interactive and participatory. After a full-group discussion of where MSU is now in India (e.g., alumni and student enrollments) and a question and answer period with the Provost and Acting Dean of International Studies and Programs and review of the India Concept Paper, attendees participated in discussions of one of six thematic areas within the “Making a Difference” sessions. Participants selected one of these themes: Education; Environment; Food Systems and Agribusiness; Gender, Poverty and Social Inequities; Health; or Technology and Economic Development. Key areas of consideration discussed in the afternoon session included: Working with Alumni from the Region, Indian Stakeholders-Improving Their On-campus Experience, MSU Student Study and Travel in India and Community/Campus Cultural Understanding and Opportunities.

The MSU Community can continue to engage in deliberations related to Global Encounter-India after reviewing the proceedings and data from the September 22, 2006 discussions and supporting materials posted below. ISP welcomes your comments on the posted reports at <globalencounter@isp.msu.edu>. Comments may also be submitted to the Director of the Center for Asian Studies or the Dean of International Studies and Programs.
