Japanese Level 2

Course Description

This course is designed for students who have studied the Japanese language at a college level for a minimum of one year or have obtained a comparable level of competency, including the mastery of approximately 150 kanji used in context.

Course Objectives

By the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. improve all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) required in the contemporary Japanese language;
  2. demonstrate a rudimentary understanding and appreciation of important socio-cultural practices central to effective communication in Japan;
  3. learn 170 additional kanji;
  4. improve their reading and comprehension of written Japanese through essays and short stories;
  5. compose short essays using more complex structural patterns;
  6. increase awareness of the different levels and styles of speech present in the use of Japanese (written/spoken, formal/informal, men's/women's, and polite expressions); and
  7. exhibit a wider appreciation of contemporary Japanese customs, cultures and social phenomena.
