Summer Intensive Language Program

The Summer Intensive Japanese Language Program is designed for students who want to concentrate on Japanese language study while experiencing life in Japan. The curriculum for this 9-week program is made up of a 10-credit Japanese language course, consisting of approximately 18-20 classroom hours per week. The summer program runs from June 1st through the first full week in August.

Intensive Japanese language is taught at four different levels, from beginning to advanced. No prior Japanese language study is necessary. Japanese language courses are 10 credits, covering a standard academic year's worth of material in nine weeks. This course is often considered the most challenging at JCMU and students in this course must be prepared to devote ample time outside of the classroom to study. Placement tests given at the beginning of the program are used to determine the appropriate level for each student. More information on the four levels may be found on the Japanese Language Program Academic page.

Beyond classroom training, JCMU students are able to apply their increasing language skills in the local community and throughout Japan. Field trips, demonstrations, and other activities, whether organized by the JCMU staff or initiated by students, complement language study.
