MSU International Student Funding & Awards Overview
A number of funding opportunities exist to support the
international activities of MSU's students and to support international
students at MSU. ISP
also recognizes international involvement through several annual awards.

Annual award for one US and one international student who has made
a significant contribution in promoting international understanding
at MSU. For more information, contact the Office
for International Students and Scholars, 103 International Center.
The Honors College at Michigan State University offers the Cole
International Study Award and the Benschop International Enrichment
Award to help defray the costs of living and studying abroad.
A variety of scholarships and grants for MSU students in MSU study
abroad programs. Go to the Office of Study Abroad, Room 109 International
Center or their website.
Supports dissertation field research in Africa by students from
Sub-Saharan Africa. Sponsored by the African Studies Center (ASC)
and the Women in International Development Program (MSU-WID), in
cooperation with the Center for Advanced Study of International
Development (CASID).
The CIC
Foreign Language Enhancement Program (FLEP)
provides scholarships to help graduate students take advantage of
language offerings not available at their home university, but available
at another CIC
member university. Scholarships are intended to cover living expenses
incurred while attending another CIC
host institution during the summer session.
(formerly the Global Young Scholars Grant) provides funding for
graduate students to present papers with an international focus
at international professional conferences at international locations.
The award is provided to a graduate student/junior faculty or professional
from South Africa. Candidates are nominated by the MSU department
recommending admission. First preference will be given to those
applicants applying to come to MSU for the first time and from home
institutions with linkage agreements with MSU who also have matching
support from their home institution. Nominations should be submitted
by April 15th each year.
Two annual awards to encourage MSU African students to enhance
their studies and make a contribution to the development of their
country. Women are strongly urged to apply. For more information

U.S. and international Ph.D. candidates in the Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), Arts and Letters (CAL), Education (ED), and Social Science (SSC), who are planning dissertation research in a country outside of the United States, who are at the predissertation research stage, and who will travel for 60 days or more are elibible for up to $5000 for reembursment of travel expenses.
The Traveling Scholar Program enables doctoral-level students
at any CIC
university to take advantage of educational opportunities--specialized
courses, unique library collections, unusual laboratories--at any
other CIC
university without change in registration or increase in tuition.
This scholarship is available to MSU graduate students (Masters
or Ph.D. Level) or MSU professional students who are in the either
the College of Human Medicine or the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
It is meant to fund international health research (graduate level)
or approved international health clerkships ( 4-6 week duration)
for third or fourth year medical students.
A single fellowship of up to $10,000 for the 2005-2006 academic
year to an MSU graduating senior who plans to pursue a
master's degree in international affairs at a U.S. university. The
fellowship is exclusively for tuition and is for one year of full-time
graduate study.
Award for the best graduate and undergraduate paper on an Asian topic. For more information contact the

in International Education and Other Disciplines
The 3rd edition of the Students' Guide to Scholarships, Grants,
and Funding Sources in International Education and Other Disciplines
is now ready for distribution. The guide is a useful and comprehensive
reference work to obtain information on funding publications, web
sites, and grants in international education and on other disciplines.
The guide consists of 228 pages and each citation is annotated with
a description and appropriate web sites. The cost is $15 for a hard
copy or $10 for a CD which includes postage and handling.
