The 2008 Fulbright Informational Workshops

International Studies and Programs at MSU is sponsoring two Fulbright Informational Workshops for graduate students and students graduating in 2009. These workshops will provide information on an outstanding opportunity for an international scholarly experience. This will enhance the recipient's career potential and promote and enrich her/his life. Fulbright Fellowship Programs are offered in over 140 countries worldwide. They provide grants of $25,000-$40,000 to cover round trip air travel, a monthly living stipend, health and accident insurance, and, in some cases, tuition waivers and research allowances.

The workshops provide an opportunity to learn:

  • How a Fulbright experience can enhance your life and career
  • About current Fulbright Programs and the application process
  • Advice on choosing a host country and making contacts abroad
  • How to identify and enlist helpful MSU advisers
  • How solicit winning letters of recommendation
  • How to prepare a competitive Fulbright application proposal
  • Ask questions and visit with past Fulbright Fellowship winners

Fulbright Programs

Limited information about the programs is summarized below. Please see the respective websites for more details.

  • U.S. Student Fulbright Program

    Description
    This program is available to both MSU seniors graduating in 2009 and graduate students. Applicants must have a B.A. or B.S. before the beginning date of the grant. This program is sometimes referred to as the "comprehensive" or "full grant" student Fulbright. Approximately 1200 such fellowships are awarded each year. In addition, special programs are offered under the Islamic Civilization Initiative, Community Service Grants to Russia, teaching English language and conversation, and business. The same application form applies for all programs.
    Eligibility
    Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
    Deadline
    The Fulbright U.S. Student Program application forms will be available on-line May 1, 2008. The MSU internal deadline is Thursday, September 25, 2008. The national, on-line, submission deadline is Friday, October 17, 2008; and the hard copy application deadline is October 20, 2008.
  • Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad

    Description
    Six-to-twelve month grants for dissertation research outside of Western Europe. Approximately 150 awards are given each year.
    Eligibility
    Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
    Deadline
    The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program application materials usually become available in late August or early September. The tentative MSU campus deadline is October 17, 2008 and the national submission deadline is on or about October 20, 2008.
