My experience studying abroad was like nothing I have ever experienced. It truly changed my perspective on the world and of my life.

In the sense of advertising, I learned so much through workshops and by being exposed to advertisements that target different countries. It was extremely educational and helpful to compare Greek ads to American ads and recognize how the target audience varies from place to place.

Coming to a different country with only one other person whom I was not rooming with, was already a huge step outside of my comfort zone. Personally, I have always been very anxious but have always wanted to travel the world and push myself to my full potential. In doing so, I have made many friends that will last a lifetime, experienced things I used to only dream of, and have learned to never let my anxiety hold me back from things.

Originally coming to a non-English speaking environment was extremely overwhelming, but over time it becomes an easier thing to pick up on. It taught me that although we can translate many words, the grammar doesn’t translate the same way, so sometimes you need to make connections and help others to understand.

From Greece I have learned to be more environmentally friendly. Here in Europe, they are always aware of the environment and try to keep our world clean. It helped me to realize the true beauty of different places and understand more thoroughly the reason for being environmentally friendly.

There are no myths that I can “bust” about studying abroad. When people say that it has changed their lives, I could not agree more. It has made me a more open-minded and better person.

I think my story relates to many other students, especially those who studied at Deree. The RA’s, the professors, the locals, and everyone I have met has been extremely open minded and happy to help or share their culture with us. When you are surrounded by such great people, it is difficult to have a bad experience. I think my story will excite my parents and friends as well as donors and alumni. When I graduate from Michigan State, as an alumnus I will look back and hear stories about students that studied at the American College of Greece and will get excited. I love sharing the experiences I’ve learned, and I have loved being in Greece for 5 weeks.
