One of the most impactful experiences of the program was our visit to the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding. This was not just a meal—it was an immersive experience in Emirati culture, traditions, and values. As we enjoyed delicious local dishes like machboos (spiced rice with meat) and luqaimat (sweet dumplings with date syrup), we engaged in meaningful discussions about Ramadan, daily life in the UAE, and cultural customs. What stood out the most to me was the strong emphasis on hospitality and respect, values deeply embedded in both personal and professional interactions.
This experience reinforced how cultural awareness is crucial in global business. I learned that in the UAE, business is built on relationships, trust, and personal connections rather than just transactions. This insight is something I will carry forward in my career, as understanding different cultural approaches to business can be the key to success in international markets.
One myth I can bust about studying abroad is that you need to be fluent in the local language to have a meaningful experience. While language skills are helpful, openness, curiosity, and cultural respect matter even more. The people I met were incredibly welcoming, eager to share their culture, and happy to bridge communication gaps.
For any student considering studying abroad, I cannot recommend it enough. This experience expanded my worldview, deepened my cultural understanding, and gave me confidence in navigating international settings. Whether you are interested in business, personal growth, or simply experiencing a new culture, studying abroad is a life-changing opportunity.
A huge thank you to Professor Rimer, our tour guide Asaad, and my fellow students for making this an unforgettable journey.
