Through my time abroad with Michigan State University, I discovered a version of myself I was never able to explore before. My minor in anthropology had already set the stage for my interest in ancient cultures and archaeological ruins, but nothing could have prepared me for the connection I would feel when experiencing them firsthand. I was instantly in awe of the vibrant colors of our new environment, from the bright green nature to the beautiful water.

This journey didn't just kickstart a passion for travel, it also opened my eyes to the cultural diversity. I was surprised by the way local communities adapted their surroundings to cater to the needs of tourists. Yet, what interested me the most was the obvious sense of pride and connection the locals felt toward their history. Many Belizeans are actively working to reconnect with their past, preserving ancient traditions and ancestral ties such as renewing hobbies such as pottery making. It was inspiring to see how they placed such importance on understanding and honoring their history, something that made my studies of anthropology feel even more meaningful.

From this program I learned to break out of my shell speaking with strangers, as well as making new friends. What I hadn't anticipated was how much my classmates' diverse backgrounds would impact me, too. Traveling with my best friend made the experience even more memorable, but I also realized that many students, especially those hesitant about studying abroad, share the same anxieties I had.

For me, the biggest hurdle was the concern over finances, capability, and general uncertainty. As a junior now in college I was starting to lose hope that I would ever have this opportunity, but I am deeply grateful that I was. I hope my story can encourage other students, especially those who may feel that international experiences are out of reach, to look into resources and find the courage to make it possible.
